In extremely local news, several teachers at my old elementary school have had their purses stolen on three separate days earlier this month. Multnomah County sheriffs nabbed two men after a teller at a local bank alerted detectives that suspicious identification was being used. The teller also gave the police information about the suspects' vehicle, which led to their arrests at a motel in Wood Village. The story is here (registration req'd).
A search recovered numerous forged checks in their possession and other stolen items and police believe they may have stolen the identities of as many as 30 people.
Seeing how the school is right across the street from my parents' house (which is where I currently live), our mailbox could certainly have been a target for the identity theives. My mom noticed an unusual charge on her credit card yesterday, and it doesn't say where the credit was used so it's a possibility that someone could have stolen a bunch of blank credit card checks.
I also wonder how these two guys could have gotten into the school without being noticed and then went about stealing purses? The article doesn't say they broke into teachers' cars, so it's just a little bit odd. I guess these guys just might have been very brazen.
