I'm very excited that this movie is going to be playing in Portland this Friday as part of the Portland International Film Festival.
When I was in grade school, Nausicaa was a frequent rental from the local Safeway. Back then, the movie was known in the U.S. as "Warriors of the Wind."
Nausicaa takes place in a post-apocalyptic world covered with toxic jungles that are host to dangerous mutant insects. Mankind has reverted to a feudal society with a few modern technologies, and various kingdoms fight wars with each other and the growing toxic environment. Throw in an ass-kicking princess who flies around on a jet-powered hang-glider, knights and tanks, gigantic angry pill bugs and a fire-breathing demon, and you've got a great animated movie.
A few years ago I found out that Nausicaa was heavily edited/mangled before it was release in the US as "Warriors," and thanks to my anime-loving cousin, I eventually managed to watch an uncut version of movie, albeit without subtitles. Now, I'll have the chance to watch it on a big screen, although I think it will be dubbed. I prefer subtitles, but since Disney has done a pretty good job dubbing Spirited Away and other Studio Ghibli films, I don't doubt that this film will be of any less quality.
If you get the chance, rent it on DVD. I don't think you'll disappointed.
I'm glad Portland doesn't have ohms. Them's mean bastards.
